November 27, 1998 - It's a cold Friday night in New York. A chill has
engulfed the city after an unusually warm fall season. It makes you think twice about
leaving one's confines, but tonight the sound systems are in town. Jaro is in Brooklyn
with rumors flying that a prominent NY sound lays waiting to ambush them. In Queens, it's
England versus Jamaica and that could only mean David Rodigan is here to do battle with
Body Guard. Whatever the choice, either show was guaranteed to give you your money's
worth. Still we ended up a Amazura to check out the 'advertised' clash.
Surveying the scene, Body Guard led by Johnny was decked out in a custom made suit with a checkered representation of the Jamaican flag. Not to be outdone, Rodigan was in his customary disguised attire, this time as a jockey. Throughout the crowd waved flags from the two countries, with a slight edge for England.
Body Guard started things off. Lynx started by giving due respect to Father
Rodigan, saying he wouldn't make the same mistake that some other sound guy made. Already
a forward. Johnny wasted no time in rinsing dubs from Bounty Killer which had Lynx on top
of the speakers, at least 15 feet high hyping the crowd. Guard dropped some unexpected
tunes, which had to be their strategy. Play them early to garner the English support.
This proved to be true as Rodigan, started out by playing dubs from artists that Body Guard had played already. It never mattered much as he still held his English supporters. As it his style, Rodigan let the tunes speak for him, introducing his sound with comedic dubs and singers galore.
True to his word, Lynx never brought any hardcore lyrics to 'roughup' Rodigan. It was strictly a tune clash and both sides brought out the big tunes early. There was some confusion by Rodigan as to when the tune fi tune should start ( was this a ploy to go to the tune fi tune? ) so maybe this was the reason, all the big dubs were spent early. Rodigan risked disqualification and even deducted points from himself but he said he had to do it. Playing back one of Body Guard dubs (Can't Believe Mi Eyes) he actually turned his diehard supporters towards Body Guard.
Out of desperation now, David had to rely on his dancing
skills to bring the fans back. He jumped out on stage and
gyrated in
fashion. The crowd sensed that he was back and was on the verge of turning things back his
way.
On the contrary, during the dub fi dub segment, he made another crucial mistake in playing back another tune. This was unforgivable and soon realized that he had too much ground to catch up, he then conceded the clash graciously.
