On Friday night December 21, 2001 saw VP Records, RBM and Jamroc Int.
Promotion put on a night called "Relive History
Together Again" in
which we patrons sure got more that we bargained for. On this night in Amazura, we were
supposed to see live in concert The Colonel Josey Wales, The General Brigadier Jerry,
Admiral Bailey, Daddy U-Roy and the Grammy Kid Shabba Ranks.......we were also to be
musically entertained by Downbeat the Ruler, King Addies and Afrique. I was eagerly
anticipating this night as I wanted to really see these artist hold a old time rub ah dub
vibes.
I made sure I arrived early to Amazura on this particular friday night because I knew it
would be exciting from start to finish. I arrived inside the venue shortly before midnight
and was greeted with dubplates and crucial 45s from the ever classical Tony Screw from
Downbeat. For about 2-3 hours Tony Screw was fling some original foundation rub a dub
tunes. For awhile he was the only sound man billed for the show that I saw on stage but
then others like Neil Diamond from King Addies and Crazy Ritchie from Afrique eventually
showed up. Even after they showed up they never took over the control tower, I was even
wondering if
any of these other sounds where going to play....which turned out to be
a negative. At sometime between 2-3AM Tony Screw handed the throne over to Stereograph who
continued the pace. Then shortly after we saw Daddy U-Roy take the mic and called for the
entertainers to come forward and then men like Josey Wales and Briggy and surprise guest
Major Mackerel came forward and started the heat. Then we next saw the microphone passed
to certain young artist such as Plucky Ranks and Terrorist were also in the house who got
a little time to shine.
Not long into the stage show the show just lost any order it may have had as we saw tons
of special guest artist coming forth and passing the microphone. I wont even claim to
remember the order the entertainers came on stagebut I can tell you that the night saw
surprises hit the stage such as the Don Dada Supercat, Junior Demus, Major Mackerel,
Johnny Osbourne, Shinehead, Chuck Turner, Michael "Lick Shot" Palmer, Sammy
Dread, Sluggy Ranks, Willow Wilson and the like of Conroy Smith who unlike everyone else
decided he wanted to flop himself. Instead of doing his one big tune "Dangerous"
and passing on the microphone, he decided he wanted to do new tunes and claim he started
reggae music in which got him a serious boo from the crowd. Mr. Smith seemed to be a but
tipsy as he took a nose dive off the stage
into the crowd and
had to be pulled back up by his fellow entertainers........Supercat had to ask him if him
think him ah de twin towers...but the show went on. We then saw artist like Admiral Bailey
and the Grammy Kid Shabba Ranks decked out in fine style as usual. Artist like Shabba,
Supercat, Junior Demus, Josey Wales, Major Mackerel, Admiral Bailey and Briggy continued
the vibes and passed the mic and worked the
crowd in fine style until
the colonel had some problem with security and starting blurting out expletives at them
which kind of deaded the crowd but us hardcore fans still lingered around hungry for more
lyrics. After about 15 minutes Shinehead grabbed the mic and try to build back the vibes.
He was then joined by Briggy, Mackerel and then Josey who worked for about another half
and hour while it was getting late and Amazura was trying to lock up and break down the
musical equipment on them. It was about 6AM and the show had to come to a close and I had
to go to my bed.
All in all this was the best show I have been to in years, the vibes were right and mi is
a bredda weh loves vibes. Haffi bun ah fiah on the promoters for them 40/50 dollars gate
fee though....dem think seh black people is at their privilege to rip off. I will never
stop... haffi keep the FIRE burning .............................................
